Buddhism
~70% of Sri Lankans are Buddhist. Temple of the Sacred Tooth (Kandy) is the most revered. Remove shoes, dress modestly (cover shoulders & knees) when visiting temples.
Hinduism & Others
Hindu temples in Jaffna, Colombo, and east coast. Islam and Christianity also practiced. Sri Lanka celebrates diversity – many festivals throughout the year.
Ancient Kingdoms
Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms, including Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, were centers of advanced irrigation, monumental architecture, and Buddhist scholarship that flourished for over a millennium.

Major Events & Celebrations
Esala Perahera (Kandy)
July/August. Grand procession with elephants, drummers, and dancers honoring the Sacred Tooth. One of Asia's most spectacular festivals. Book accommodation early.
Sinhala & Tamil New Year
April (13–14). Family celebrations, traditional games, and special sweets. Most businesses close. Great time to experience local customs.
Vesak
Full moon in May. Buddhist celebration – temples lit with lanterns, free food (dansal) offered. Island-wide festivities.
Deepavali, Christmas, Eid
Hindu, Christian, and Muslim festivals observed. Colombo and major cities have varied celebrations.
Arts & Dance
Traditional Performance
Kandyan Dance
Classical dance from the hill country. Elaborate costumes, fire-walking, and acrobatics. Watch at Kandy Cultural Show (~$5–10).
Devil Dance
Ritual dances to ward off illness and evil. Masks from Ambalangoda are famous. Mask museums in Colombo and south coast.
Drumming
Traditional drums (geta beraya, thammattama) accompany dances and ceremonies. Rhythmic and energetic – a feast for the ears.
